How many porta potties do I need for my event?

You need 1 standard porta potty for every 50 guests at a 4-hour event with no food or drinks. With food, plan 1 per 35 guests. With alcohol, plan 1 per 30 guests. For every 2 hours past 4, add 1 unit per 100 guests. Use the calculator for your exact count.

Food and drinks?

Our planning rule: 1 standard unit per 50 guests for up to 4 hours with no food or drinks, 1 per 35 with food, 1 per 30 with alcohol. Add 1 unit per 100 guests for every 2 hours past 4. Accessible units follow the 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2 (at least 5% per cluster).

How do you adjust for longer events?

For an event longer than 4 hours, add 1 standard unit per 100 guests for every extra 2 hours. A 200-guest wedding with alcohol for 6 hours needs 7 units for the first 4 hours plus 2 more, for 9 total. A 2-day festival also needs a service visit each night.

Worked example

  1. Guests: 200, alcohol served, 6 hours.
  2. Base: 200 ÷ 30 = 6.7, round up to 7 units.
  3. Extra time: 2 hours past 4, so add 1 unit per 100 guests = 2 units.
  4. Total: 9 standard units. Public event? Make at least 1 of them wheelchair-accessible.
  5. Food served: add 3 hand-washing stations.

How many porta potties does a construction crew need?

A construction crew of 20 or fewer workers needs at least 1 toilet under OSHA Table D-1. Crews over 20 need 1 seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers, and crews of 200 or more need 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers. We recommend 1 unit per 10 workers with weekly service.

See the construction rental page for the full crew table, or read OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51.

Where does this method come from?

Our planning rule uses the common industry starting point of about 1 portable toilet per 50 people for 4 hours, then adds units for food, alcohol and time based on how fast units fill. Jobsite minimums come from OSHA 1926.51 Table D-1. Accessible counts come from the 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2.

Treat these numbers as a planning guide. Your venue, permit office or safety lead sets any legal minimum for your event.

Sizing questions

How many porta potties for 50 guests?

A 4-hour party for 50 guests needs 1 standard porta potty with no food, or 2 with food or alcohol. Many hosts choose 1 flushing unit plus 1 standard unit for comfort.

How many porta potties for 300 people?

A 4-hour event for 300 people with food needs 9 standard porta potties and 3 hand-washing stations. With alcohol, plan 10. Public events need at least 1 accessible unit per cluster.

Do women need more porta potties than men?

Women take longer per visit, so events with mostly female guests should add about 1 unit for every 4 in the count. Units with urinals help speed lines at events with mostly male guests.

How many porta potties for a 5K race?

A 5K race for 500 runners needs about 10 standard units near the start, because most runners use them in the 30 minutes before the gun. Add 1 accessible unit and 2 near the finish.
